Good News is our friends will be okay; bad news is they have some injuries and a totaled Jeep. Our NC friends, Linda, Larry & Brett decided to go to Durango and get some supplies & groceries. On the way home, they were hit head-on by a drunk driver on Hwy 550 by a Silverado pickup around 6:00pm. Both vehicles were totaled.
They called us from the accident scene & we drove there. I rode in the ambulance with Linda to the hospital south of Durango. She has a fractured sternum & rib. Larry & Brett stayed at the scene to talk to the highway patrol & sheriff, then Jim brought them to the same ER to be checked out. Larry had a broken nose. All three have lots of bruises, bumps, cuts & mega soreness! They are lucky to be alive. Linda said it was a God thing. I think she is right. The driver of the pickup had to be cut out of his vehicle & was unresponsive at the scene. He was helicoptered to the same ER and was in the room next to Linda. However, he was able to leave the hospital before our people (but in handcuffs)! We all got back to the campground around 3:30 Friday morning.
They saw the pickup cross the center line and come toward them. Larry kept honking his horn. The pickup looked like it was going to go back into his own lane and then came straight for them. Larry had to make some quick decisions. Just below the small shoulder of road was a drop-off! He thought about going into the opposite lane, but didn't know what the other driver was going to do and didn't want to put Brett & Linda in jepodary of being hit broadside so he opted for the head-on. The Jeep held up remarkably well against the large pickup.
This Jeep was Brett's baby and he is really upset. He has put so much time and effort into making it his pride and joy. Please remember this family in your prayers that they continue to mend, both physically & mentally.
